Week One: Delorentos
During the Rose Of Tralee I got a job as a photographer and decided to get some interviews while I was backstage, this is what I got from Delorentos.
What Bands Influenced Ye The Most?
Níal: 80’s indie and 90’s indie. So although you might get slightly different answers from each of the four of us, realistically, it was independent music in the 80’s and 90’s, from The Smiths to Radiohead, whether Radiohead would go into indie. Those kind of bands. Indie music.
Explain The Band Name:
Kieran: It’s so people know people can put a tag on your music.
Níal: No,no explain OUR band name.
Kieran: It’s not something that’s really explainable. It’s more of a concept.
Níal: *sigh* The band name does mean something, but more importantly its just the name of our band. I feel like I’m translating for you (Kieran).
Favourite Thing You’ve Been Able To Do So Far?
Níal: Am wow that’s a good question.
Kieran: Travel a lot, which is great. Indulge our creativity, and not having people tell you that you’re mental. Have fun, write music. Being in a band is great because you don’t have a load of people thinking its weird that you spend most of your life sitting around a guitar and writing songs. Because the rest of my friends think I’m crazy, and that I should probably get a job. And then I explain to them that I have a job, and well they, they think I’m crazy. But that’s okay because most of their jobs aren’t great, and well I hate all my friends.
Níal: This isn’t going to be shown anywhere where his friends can see, is it?
Favourite Venue You’ve Ever Played At?
Níal: My favourite venue I ever played at was, do you (Kieran) remember the Craic festival in New York?
Kieran: Oh ya Bessie Reily’s right?
Níal: Ya something like that, wait no that was in Texas.
Kieran: Whatever
Níal: It was just a really cool experience to play in America and play in New York. As for a favourite gig in Ireland amm…
Kieran: I really liked ‘Club Head Bang Bang’ when we played it first, that’s in Tralee, it was in the Greyhound
Níal: They had like old arcade computer games, and projections and fairy lights.
Kieran: And you’d walk through the bar and the people would look at you as if saying *puts on old man accent* Get out! Because it was an old mans bar.
Níal: And then you’d walk through these doors, and be like hey fellow crusty’s!
Did Ye Ever Watch Rose Of Tralee When Ye Were Younger?
Kieran: Ya Níal’s gone for it a few time’s, he just keeps falling. There’s a couple of interviews points he never gets.
Níál: I’d LOVE to be an escort, it sounds brilliant!
Kieran: A male escort?
Níal: Ya not for the Rose Of Tralee.
Kieran: Just generally so yeah? Yeah why not sure. Yeah the Rose Of Tralee is brilliant you have your Gay Byrne, and your Daithi and your Ray Darcy, and is it Summer RTE?
Níal: You watched it?!
Kieran: I think my parents watched it.
Níal: Yeah right, you watched it.
Kieran: No I actually only recently watched it.
Níal: You blantly watched it!
Kieran: I didn’t blantly watch it, I’d have no problem saying so if I did!
Níal: So say it.
Kieran: *Chuckling* We actually played at the Rose Of Tralee a couple of years ago, we’re actually only here because we were told that Daithí (O Sé) will be around later and we’ll get to meet him. He’s very charming. Very charming, very very charming.
What’s The Weirdest Thing A Fan Has Ever Done?
Kieran: Tattoos, people have gotten tattoos of our band name, which is a bit strange, but fair play to them. Just don’t kill us.
Níal: *In daydream whispers* Don’t kill us.
Kieran: (To Níal) What else have they done?
Níal: They’ve done loads of stuff. But to be honest I think my mom has done crazier things than our fans. Hi mom! *Waves frantically*
Kieran: She is actually disgraceful
What Has She Done?!
Níal: That’s between me and the guards…
Future Of The Band?
Níal: We are releasing a new album, and we’re doing loads of cool stuff over the next couple of months, that we’ve never done before.
Basically, we’ve an opportunity to do whatever we want to do as an independent band. We’ve always had loads of crazy ideas that either we haven’t gone through with over being afraid of the consequences or something else has held us back. But this time around we get to do all the crazy things we’ve never done before.
God dammit we’re going to do it. It mightn’t work 9 times out of 10, but that one time.
(To Kieran who’s playing the guitar) What is that film? Kurt Russell, he’s an ice skating coach *puts on a terrible Kurt Russell voice* “It mightn’t work 9 times, but that 10th time”
Kieran: Is that Kurt Russell?!
Níal: *Laughing* that’s my Kurt Russell
Kieran: What happened to him?!
Níal: He had a stroke…
Kieran: Oopsie. Yeah as Níal said, in the future we will be releasing an album, and some other stuff about being great.
Níal: We’ve been working for the last 6 months on our next album, and we’ve never spent that long on an album, and we think it’s our best album, so we’re going to do a load of crazy s***
Kieran: On our ‘Best Of’ album, a lot of the songs will be from this album I’d say.
Níal: Yeah at least a third.
Kieran: Yeah a good third, in the greatest hits of, because they’re two different albums *Níál cuts in*
Níal: I’ll be honest with you I’m switching off right now…
Kieran: Am I too descriptive?
Níál: I just feel like your using two many words.
Kieran: I am using too many words aren’t I?
Thanks to Delorentos for the great interview and performance on the main stage afterwords, posters of show are availble through leaving a comment stating *Poster* on what photograph you'd like as a poster in the album I have of Delorentos in my photo's!
